GA meetings
#1
i have recently come clean about my gambling addiction to my wife. she would like me to attend a GA meeting to help me come to terms with my addiction. i want to stop and i want to do every thing i can to quit.

my question is this, how much more help can sitting in a room with other addicts be. if i dont go, am i more likely to gamble again.

i just feel a little bit stupid going, and i know every one else feels the same but that still doesnt make it any easier.

if you guys believe it would help then please let me know. my addiction is small in comparison to some of you hence why maybe i feel just handing over my finances to my wife and putting blocks on my laptop will do.

i look forward to your comments and advice.

kind regards

Hi
you have said it you want to stop gambling! Please take it from me a compulsive gambler for 24 years,i have just been to my 1st two meetings and already reaping the rewards 16 days and no betting. It took me a long time to come clean to my family and believe me that is much harder than going in to a G A meeting.
I would urge you to go asap, you will not be judged by any one after all you will all be in the same boat with the same goal. You dont have to even talk if you dont want too you can just listen.
As they said to me at my first meeting we are not sure how it works it just does, you have taken the 1st step and i would urge you to take the next one im sure you wont regret it
Good luck

Bigfens you have done the right thing coming on here, you have come to the right place if you want help.

Dont underestimate the help GA meetings will give you in overcoming your problems. Even though you feel your addiction is small, trust me, it will sure enough become bigger and bigger, why not attend a meeting and see how it goes?

You will get the best advice from those who know (other compulsive gamblers) giving you the best tools to arrest your gambling and all the nasty side effects that go with it!

Hi bigfens

Your addiction is not judged on how big/small your problem is, or how much you gamble.
It is simply this...if you can't afford to lose what you are gambling, or gambling is causing other problems in your life...then you have a problem. That's the basic idea.

Whether you think your problem is minor, aren't you better dealing with it now, rather than fixing up the mess afterwards? I know if I had my time over, I would have turned to GA 10 years ago, noy one year ago when I did. A lot of damage was done in those nine years <!-- s:oops: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_redface.gif" alt="" title="Embarrassed" /><!-- s:oops: -->

The other benefit of going to a meeting might be to instill in you "what can happen" to you should you keep on gambling. It could be the catalyst for you to really stop this silly nonsense of chasing the "big win"

Best wishes with the choice you make

You write:

'my question is this, how much more help can sitting in a room with other addicts be. if i dont go, am i more likely to gamble again.'

My question to you is:

'What have you possibly got to lose by attending a G.A. meeting?'

You state that 'i want to stop and i want to do every thing i can to quit.'

Then the very least you can do is try a G.A. meeting- to be fair to yourself and your partner- and in my opinion, to give yourself the best chance of quitting- spend an hour or two listening to people who are successfully beating the same addiction as you.
