I have previously attended gamblers annonymous to support a close family member with his attendance at GA. I truly believe the system of having the support of others attending the meeting is a fantastic idea for service users. it is often the case that recovering gambling addicts have hurt the ones they love most, so to be able to experience the recovery with that person is such a lovely way of showing the people you have hurt just how much you are trying, and to have us there to give support and share our stories can be encouraging for the service users, and remind them of one of the many positive reasons they are fighting their demands.
As a social worker I can also see the real benefits of this group, and believe many of the hosts of the sessions are extremely skilled and would make fab social workers <!-- s;-) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif" alt=";-)" title="Wink" /><!-- s;-) --> they are dedicated to the cause, show real empathy, give people the opportuinty to air their grievances and use many skills and theories that are effective in helping people through the ongoing struggle. I have seen elements of effective theories that seem to have a real positive effect on the group.
the group itself has a wonderful atmosphere, and the members have a real dedication to helping each other, and have real unity amongst themselves.
last but not least....
I am extremely proud of my dad, and know that even though I am no longer able to attend, he has the strength to carry on and fight this unrelentless addiction.
Well done to GA, because I dont think he could do it without you! x
