I don't know about anyone else but I am very ashamed of this horrible addiction. How does one just stop this behaviour?

Hi ashamed

You wont stop gambling unless you want to. Like an alcoholic or a smoker, it is an addiction.
A lot of CG's have to hit 'rock bottom' before they stop. I was one of those. Some of the lucky ones wake up early enough and get the help they need before any major damage is done.
The financial damage is bad enough, however often the damage to relationships is irretrievable. <!-- sSad --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_sad.gif" alt="Sad" title="Sad" /><!-- sSad -->

GA has helped me enormously. I would sincerely recommend that you attend GA meetings.

The major problem to stopping gambling is yourself. As I stated previously, you have to want to stop. Even then it is not an easy addiction to beat. That is why I recommend GA. Being fellow gamblers, we already know how you feel, we have probably done what you have done (if not worse), and we can help you.

Best wishes

Try a G.A. meeting- there is a list on this site. There you can hear first hand how people are beating their own addictive behaviours, and freeing themselves from the multitude of problems associated with compulsive gambling.

Ok, a few home truths (sorry for the abruptness!)...It's already been said that you have to want to stop. If you don't truly want to accept help and turn your life around there's absolutely no point! GA was the best thing to ever happen to me, but you have to give yourself a kick up the backside and work for it. However, if you put half the effort into your recovery as you have done with your gambling, you'll be well on the way.

It is a truly horrible addiction that can take you to horrific lows and if you don't wake up and smell the coffee, it'll get worse and worse. I wish you all the best and hope you can find the courage to embrace sanity.
