How do I make the gambling feeling go away?
#1
I have not gambled in over one year, and found that when i did it made me feel sick and I did not enjoy it, during or after. This was only on holiday - supposedly for fun!

My gambling problem centred around fruit machines and my ex partner and I gambled for about 7 years and it was the centre of our lives. I found that once we broke up I didn't gamble again although i wanted to sometimes. (My new partner of two and a half years knows about the problem)

The problem I have is that i don't know how to get the feeling of wanting to gamble to go away. If I see someone playing a machine I really want to play - but I don't. I hate having that feeling and can only assume it is like the feeling someone who has given up smoking feels. Any tips to solve the problem?

Hi HelenY

I don't know that I can answer your question. I have now been gamble free for 16 months.
For me to stop gambling I had to reach my "rock bottom"...I attempted suicide. I occasionally have thoughts about gambling, but I know that if I had "just one bet" I would be in trouble again.
What would I do this time?

You sound as though you have resisted the urge thus far, but are struggling.

Do you feel as though "you are powerless over gambling"? If so, can you admit to yourself HONESTLY that you could not control your gambling if you did gamble?

Might I suggest attending a few GA meetings. Meet with people who have a this problem, and are attempting to overcome it. It does not matter whether you gamble in small or large amounts.
If gambling, (or the thoughts of gambling) is affecting your life, then you do have a problem.

Best wishes
Roy

i have been gamble free for almost four years thanks to Derby GA, and I can honestly say the feeling to gamble never completely goes away. You can beat it however. I find my weekly meetings a great help, as I use them as a down load session and can meet with other people who are like me and feel the same way. If there is a meeting in your area maybe you could give it a try and we are always taught the golden rule of one day at a time, anyway best of luck for the future, superdebs

It's only been 7 days for me, but I find that if I stop the thought and think about something else it will help. If I start to think about how much fun it will be to go back to the casino I will be doomed. Win or lose I will always lose if I play.
