where to turn next?
#1
Hi,

Im Adam im 23, i have been gambling since I was 14-15 it started off by putting a few £ every week of my pocket money in the kebab shop fruitmachines on a friday and saturday night... now i am losing thousands on a monthly basis...i do not know how it has escalated to this point but i am currently at the stage of being thousands of pounds in debt.
I am lucky as I have a good job but it is to my own detriment as the more i earn the more i gamble, it has got to the point where i now book every pay day off just to sit at home and gamble (and 90% of the time) lose all my monthly salary in 2 or 3 hours!!..i have sold my car and my watch this week, which was just a way of getting money to gamble with, which i have now lost!!
i am losing everybody close to me, my parents know i have a gambing addiction, and are keen to help me anyway they can by getting me support or what it takes, it makes me feel sick when i know how much it hurts them to see me like this but enough is enough..
i have stolen, lied, cheated in the past and ruined many relationships with friends, gfs and colleagues!!

i need help, but i am too embarrassed to go to the local GA to me and feel It has to be me that wants to stop, to actually make me stop as i have had counselling in the past which did not help..

can CG ever stop off there own accord, or does everybody need help??
any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Hi Adam P

I am a Compulsive Gambler. I have not had a bet now for 16 months.

During that time I have been attending faithfully my GA meeting. Also during this period, I have heard of only ONE instance where a CG has remained gamble free (and still is....).

Without a doubt, if you really want to stop gambling, you can. BUT, it is not going to be easy. That is why the vast majority of CG's recommend some form of support.
For me, that support has come from GA.

I would sincerely recommend that you do go to GA. We are there to help you.

Best wishes
Roy

Hi there is hope!

i have been there got the T shirt, then sold it for gambling! go to your meeting its the best thing i ever did. i thought it would be 10 blokes sitting around prasieing god on helping them stop gambling.... but its not. at my meeting we have about 15ish people and they are all like us, gamblers that want to stop, that have done everything you have.

Its really good and i cant wait for the next meeting to have a cup of tea and chat to some really good members about how they didnt gamble that week and how i diddnt.

Go to the meeting they will be welcoming and the first one will be your hardest but your start to being gamble free

Hi

Thanks for your advice guys.

I suppose the first one is always going to be the hardest. I will give it a go on Thursday. I need to do something as it has become out of control and enough is enough.

My parents are encouraging me to go to GA and I am lucky I have a lot of support and family around me.

I am going to go on Thursday and will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again

Hi hope all is well
Just to let you know that not gambling is fantastic! i used to gamble everyday and now i dont, its still early days but 6 weeks not gambling is really good and once you get the first few weeks under your belt the rest is easier.

Going to a meeting wont be a magic wond but if you really want to stop it is the best place to go..

I will always be a compolsive gambler but one that doesnt gamble
They will give you loads of tips that are proven to work. like dont carry excess cash or have cards on you, and it makes not gambling loads easier.

I look forward to hereing how you got on
